LECTURE NOTES

Week 1 - We got a thorough rundown of the criteria and benchmarks for the brief semester in the introductory lecture. I organized a group with several of my classmates, and we're all excited to collect the information required for our projects. Our objective is to provide a visual product that reflects our capacity for critical analysis of cultural and design issues.

Week 2 - Mr. Vinod gave us an educational presentation during our session that discussed visual culture and its connection to school insignia. He explored into the meaning, symbolism, and background of these emblems, as well as how they affect heritage.

Culture of Interest

First we had ideas of

1. Surf Culture: For many reasons, surfing culture is a fascinating and active area of study. Surfing is a widespread phenomenon that has had a big influence on fashion, music, art, and popular culture. Popular culture has been inspired by surfing in various ways. Understanding the development and influence of surfing culture might help one understand how popular culture has become more international. Understanding how surfing culture and ecology interact can help us understand how potent a force for social change subcultures can be. A dynamic and distinctive subculture, surfing culture has its own special language, beliefs, and social customs. Understanding the dynamics of surfing culture can help researchers better understand how subcultures arise and change through time.

2. Pakistani Truck Art:
People from all around the world are interested in the interesting and vibrant culture of Pakistani truck art. Only in Pakistan can one find the peculiar and original kind of art known as "truck art". The trucks that move around the nation are decorated with this brilliant and colorful art form. It is a type of folk art that captures the rich cultural legacy of the nation. Religious ideas, cultural values, and societal commentary are frequently expressed via art. Not only a cultural phenomena, truck art is a significant industry in Pakistan. Globally, truck art from Pakistan has becoming more well-known and acclaimed. It has been shown in museums and art galleries all around the world.

3. Scottish Culture:
For a number of reasons, Scottish culture is an interesting and fascinating research topic. Over the ages, Scotland has been shaped by a wide variety of civilizations and influences, from the Picts to the Celts, the Vikings to the Romans. Investigating the nation's past can help us understand how Scottish culture and identity have changed through time. Scottish customs are varied and vigorous, ranging from Highland games to Burns Night dinners and Hogmanay celebrations. Understanding these customs can offer a special perspective on Scotland's cultural past. Examining Scottish literature and art can show how these authors and artists were impacted by and helped to shape Scottish culture. Scottish music is varied and ever-evolving, ranging from traditional folk to modern pop.

We finally Chose Surf Culture as the Topic we were going to further research and develop.

Proposal

Ideas of project proposal

1. Magazine that showcases Surf Culture: For a number of reasons, starting a magazine devoted to surfing would be a terrific idea. A specialized sport with a fervent following is surfing. Individuals who surf frequently hunt for surfing-related content, such as technique advice, product reviews, and tales of other surfers. You may deliver this material to a niche audience that is most likely to be very interested and receptive by starting a magazine that is solely focused on surfing.

2. Surfboard design: New surfboard designs might be advantageous for a number of reasons. Surfboards are frequently used as a canvas for creative expression by artists. Surfboards can be transformed into distinctive, individualized works of functional art that highlight the artist's abilities and sense of style by developing new designs for art. Several coastal cultures place a high value on surfing, and developing fresh surfboard designs for artwork can support the celebration and preservation of these cultures. These patterns may include conventional components and motifs that reflect the history and culture of the region.

3. Digital Mural: There are various advantages to painting a mural for surfing. Many coastal communities place a high value on surfing, and a mural can honor and highlight the culture, history, and way of life connected to the activity. Also, it can support the idea that surfing is a popular pastime for people from various social backgrounds. People may be motivated to learn more about the history and culture of surfing by a mural. The environmental and social issues related to surfing, such as ocean conservation, beach access, and community involvement, can also be brought up in order to inform audiences.

We ultimately decided to combine those 3 concepts into one magazine after speaking with Mr. Asrizal. Then we gave each other tasks to do. My contribution was to design pieces about surfboard designs and surfing fashion. I wanted to draw attention to the issue of cultural elements in surf culture. I also wanted to incorporate the mural's history of Polynesian culture.

Research

Researchers and practitioners have begun to pay more attention to two aspects of surf culture: surfboard fashion and surfboard art design. The aesthetic shapes and forms of surfboards that have influenced surf culture are referred to as surfboard fashion. Several aspects of surfboard fashion have been investigated by researchers, such as the origins and development of surfboard designs, the function of branding and marketing in the industry, and the influence of fashion trends on surfboard design.

Surfboard art design refers to the incorporation of artistic elements into the design of surfboards. Many different aesthetic movements, including pop art, abstract art, and traditional Polynesian art, have influenced the designs of surfboards. The history and evolution of surfboard art, its cultural relevance, and its effects on the surfing community are just a few of the aspects of surfboard art design that have been the subject of research.

This is a summary of the information I gathered for the project. Based on Mr. Asrizal's criticisms and comments, I went into more detail on the selected subculture.

I gave a contribution by drawing up some rough preliminary sketches of several surfboard designs based on various facets of surf culture. The idea of a contrast between modernism and tradition as the direction and theme for our visual result was something I constantly reinforced. This will give a larger audience the finest possible glimpse into surf culture.

Final Proposal

After discussing it with Mr. Asrizal, we have chosen to transform our magazine into an Instagram feed that will showcase all of our works as part of our final project.

Instagram's visual focus makes it a great choice for showcasing surfing-related images and videos, thus using the platform to promote surfing is a great idea. Instagram has more than 1.2 billion active users worldwide, giving them access to a sizable and engaged audience that includes lots of surfers. Although surfing is a specialized activity, Instagram gives surfers and surf brands access to a global audience interested in surfing's culture, way of life, and gear. Additionally, Instagram's engagement tools help surfers and surf businesses engage with their followers and develop a strong online following for their content. Surfers and surf brands may broaden their reach, develop their brands, and draw in new clients by making the most of Instagram's features.

My contribution consisted of creating a variety of works that highlighted surfboard designs and surfing fashion while highlighting the significance of cultural components in the surf culture. In order to honor the Polynesian culture's impact on surfing, I also tried to include it into my designs. Polynesian culture has a strong relationship to the sport. Also, I wanted to use my artwork to encourage a better understanding and respect of the cultural diversity and tradition within the surfing community as well as to draw attention to the wider cultural background of surfing.

Data Collection

We all made the decision to read and learn more about the many parts of surfing that we were supposed to focus on in light of the comments we received following the presentation of our project proposal in Week 4 of the course. I conduct research on the styles and designs of surfboards.

Rationale: Modern surfboard art designs have developed alongside advancements in surfboard design and have become a significant part of surf culture. Surfboard artwork can be used for both aesthetic and functional objectives, since it can improve the board's performance while also giving the design a distinctive and individual touch. Surfboard designs can range from classic Hawaiian tribal patterns to contemporary graphic art and abstract concepts. Surfing's long history is preserved in part by the Polynesian patterns on surfboards. Surfers can honor the origins of the sport and the early practitioners by adopting these designs onto contemporary surfboards. Modern surfboard art designs have also been influenced by environmental concerns. To lessen their impact on the earth, many surfboard painters are increasingly employing eco-friendly materials and colors. This entails adopting sustainable production techniques, non-toxic coatings, and recycled materials. Modern surf fashion pays attention to the cultural and historical significance of surfing in Polynesia by adding Polynesian motifs, which have a long history in the sport. Polynesian patterns are eye-catching and give surf wear a distinctive and fashionable touch. Surf wear stands out on the sand and in the sea because to the unique patterns and vivid hues of Polynesian motifs.

Feedback

Week 2: The two main elements of the criticism are presented. Secondly, it is clarified that, while the art itself may be seen as a component of culture, truck art cannot be regarded as culture in and of itself. The truck's use is merely a means of representation. It is argued that a topic with the heading "Pakistan Truck Art" can be deceptive. Next, the subject of "Surfing Culture" is covered. Although the point being made is clear, it is unclear which surfing-related component is being looked at. Modern culture often views surfing as a sport, therefore examining the contrasts between the two could reveal a previously unrecognized corpus of knowledge.

Week 4: It was clear that the group had not given the presentation enough thought. It was challenging to follow the points being made because of the presentation's disjointed and insufficient organization and structure. For a presentation to go well and give the audience useful information, it is crucial to conduct careful study and comprehensive preparation. Despite not having prepared for the presentation, our group was nonetheless able to share some insightful observations and knowledge about surf culture.

Week 6: We've chosen to turn our magazine into an Instagram feed that will showcase all of our efforts for our final project after talking it over with Mr. Asrizal.

Week 8: Excellent explanation on how to start an Instagram account specializing in surf culture. Throughout the presentation, we showed that we had a solid grasp of the material and exuded enthusiasm for it.

Reflection

Developing a surf Instagram feed as a collective endeavor can be difficult in a number of ways. Communication is key when working in a team. Each participant must effectively and concisely express their thoughts, recommendations, and feedback. It can be difficult to coordinate with team members to make sure that tasks are finished on time and within the parameters of the project. To make sure that everyone is aware of their responsibilities, clear deadlines and roles must be established. Being creative is necessary to stand out in a congested social media arena when browsing Instagram sites. It can be difficult to work together as a team to produce original and engaging content, especially if everyone has a different creative vision. Due to challenges with organization, originality, and engagement, developing a surf Instagram feed in a cooperative effort can be difficult. To overcome these obstacles, it is necessary to set roles and duties, align on a creative vision, build a brand, and put a strategic engagement plan into action.
