FLIP TOPICS - Exercises

Intro to Infographic

In a group, we were tasked to research and present on different types of infographics.

Fig. 1.1- Intro to Infographics

We were tasked to find a poorly made infographic online and then remake it using an online infographic tool.

Fig. 1.2: https://venngage.com/blog/bad-infographics/

I improved this infographic by recreating it in Photoshop. I observed that the text was poorly organized throughout the infographic, making it more difficult for readers to follow. Additionally, the quotation was very large and blocked much of the illustration. The illustration was boring without any color

Quantify and Visualize Data

In order to visualise the amount and data, we had to organise items with the appropriate indicators. It's crucial to keep things straightforward and deliver the information in the most fascinating and clear way possible.

Fig. 1.4 Organized Set of Coins

I began organizing the coins on cardboard with this in mind. I chose to organize the coins in a triangle because I believed that a pyramid chart would be the most effective method to illustrate the data.  believe it is a little challenging to correctly depict data by hand. I would have preferred to organize data through digital tools.

L.A.T.C.H

Saul Wurman's L.A.T.C.H. system for organizing material, particularly in infographics, was our FLIP subject for Week 2 of FLIP.

Location describes the actual or virtual location where the data is kept or shown. The term "alphabet" refers to the arrangement of information in alphabetical order, either utilizing the first letter of each word or the full alphabet. When we talk about time, we mean arranging information chronologically, either according to when it was created or the order in which it happened. Information is categorized when related items are grouped together based on common traits. Information is arranged in a hierarchy when it is ranked according to its value or complexity, as in a tree structure with branches and sub-branches.

Wurman believed that the L.A.T.C.H. architecture would make it simpler for people to access and comprehend information.

We were assigned to first look for topic, collect data, and start sketching and designing a visual poster that combined and utilises the L.A.T.C.H principles. In this case, I will be designing a Pokemon L.A.T.C.H Infographic. I sorted out the information and findings below:

Location - Alola Region

Alphabet - Order of Pokémon types

Category - Pokémon types

Hierarchy - Evolution

Fig 2.2 - Final Infographic

It's crucial to comprehend the infographic's objective when creating one. Is it to inform viewers about the various Pokemon found in the Alola Region, or is it to help players arrange their own Pokemon collection? The infographic's structure and content will be determined by this. The infographic must to be both aesthetically pleasing and simple to read. Images and simple logos that display the typings of each Pokemon can do this. Also, it must to be logically ordered, using the type, to make it simpler for the audience to comprehend and browse.

REFLECTION

It was intriguing to learn about Saul Wurman's L.A.T.C.H. and infographics. Wurman's L.A.T.C.H. system of information organization is a clever method for facilitating easier understanding of complex material. The system, which is an acronym for Location, Alphabet, Time, Category, and Hierarchy, offers a practical foundation for arranging data visually. Infographics are a fantastic tool for visually appealingly presenting complex material. They enable us to convey vast amounts of knowledge in a condensed and understandable manner, improving comprehension and memory. Infographics are an effective tool for communicators, educators, and marketers because they can be utilized to tell a story or convey a message.

In conclusion, studying about Saul Wurman's L.A.T.C.H. method and infographics has made me realize the value of visual communication and how it can make difficult material easier to comprehend. It has also demonstrated to me the potency of well-designed infographics in effectively communicating information, and I think that understanding this will be helpful for anyone who wishes to express information in a clear and succinct manner.
